Burst dam on Bílá Desná - 19 km
Frequent floods in the foothills of the Jizera Mountains in the 19th century forced the need to build a system of interconnected dams on the Bílá and Černá Desná rivers. Construction of a dam with a loose dam designed by prof. Intz from Aachen started in 1911 and lasted until 1915. Construction was complicated not only by heavy rains, but also by the First World War, which caused austerity measures.
Exactly 10 months after the approval of the work, the dike burst. The first seepage of water, a trickle with a diameter of about 2 cm, was discovered by forest workers on 18 September 1916 at 15:30. The trickle grew rapidly, and less than half an hour later the water gushed so strongly that the workers had to flee. At 4:15 p.m., the pavement on the guide side was already collapsing, and in the next 30 minutes, a 40-meter-wide crack formed on the embankment and water began to pour into the valley. The tidal wave first hit a nearby sawmill, where it took with it loaded logs, boards, and along with uprooted trees, demolished houses in the valley and buried everything in its path. Read the consequences of this disaster below. In addition, a construction supervisor committed suicide and work on the construction of other bulk dams around the world was suspended. The dam was never rebuilt.

Zámek Frýdlant - 45 km
The beginning of the history of Frýdlant Castle dates back to the 13th century, when the Ronov family became the first owners. The castle played an important guarding role on the roads from Žitava, northeast of Silesia, to Zhořeleck and through the Jizera Mountains to Poniší. The local trails have had a tradition since the time of the Roman Empire.
From the seventies of the 13th century until 1551, it was owned by the Frýdlant Biberštejn family, who took care of the first buildings in the Renaissance style, but mainly influenced by Saxon Lusatian architecture, where there were no shortage of Gothic elements. The castle was bought by the famous warrior Rudolf from Biberštejn. The original castle had a massive tower with a circular plan, to which the palace was connected in the northwest. The fortifications of the castle were completed by bastions, the southern entrance tower and the tower with the gate in the north. The Biberštejn family improved the protection of the forecourt and it was possible to defend the castle with artillery. The Frýdlant branch of the Biberštejn family died out in 1551 - the last one was Kryštof from Biberštejn. The Czech Royal Chamber declared Frýdlant a defunct fiefdom.
